On May 25, 1948, Albert Stephens and John Stanley of the New York Black Yankees combined for a no-hitter against the Newark Eagles in game 2 of a doubleheader played in Rochester’s Red Wing Stadium (the Yankees’ home field that year). The Black Yanks won 4 to 1, the Eagles scrounging one run on an outfield error by Ben Littles. Bob Griffith had shut out the Eagles on just 3 hits in the first game.
This isn’t my discovery—the game is counted in Wayne Stivers and Larry Lester’s unpublished compilation of the 1948 season, which I am combining with my own work to produce the 1948 stats that will appear on Seamheads. But this game doesn’t appear in any published lists of Negro league no-hitters that I’m aware of, so here it is.
