Claudio and Scott, the Cuban Stars played West Virginia University in Morgantown on May 11, 1909. The Cubans won 5-2 and Méndez did pitch (in relief, it seems). I've got a couple of box scores from Pittsburgh papers, which I'll put up as an update to the original post.

Claudio: The Cuban Stars defeated St Marys, 12-5, on May 10 in St Marys WV. Mendez did not pitch, but may have played the field I don't have a box score..

Hi Gary,

Congratulations and thank you for all the successful research you do of stuff that would otherwise be forgotten. I have an West Virginia University original baseball ticket & copy of a baseball schedule showing a game played versus the Cuban stars & Jose mendez on May 10th, 1909 is there a box score, score card or any other proof available of the game being played? Or if you can direct me where i can research would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Dolores

Hey Gary- I just sent you an email with pics from the 1930 Cuban Stars under Pelayo Chacon. Let me know your thoughts!- Dolores Concepcion

Okay, let me back off that a little. Baseball Reference has the Huntington Blue Sox in the Mountain States League in 1912. So maybe it's a misprint, or maybe the game with Marshall didn't happen and Huntington was a late substitution.

Re: the Huntington/Marshall discrepancy. Marshall is in Huntington WV, so I assume they are just misnaming the Marshall team.
