Mark Blauer, a SABR member who is currently writing a history of African American baseball in Hot Springs, Arkansas, sent along these two photos of unidentified ball players, plus a couple of (also unidentified) guys in suits:
Here’s Mark:
“These two images are part of a collection found in the attic of a vacant house in Hot Springs several years ago (glued into a photo album), and are now housed at the Garland County Historical Society. We never could determine (I'm on the GCHS board) who might have left the album behind, or when, since we didn't have an exact address for the house. Anyway, another of the collection's images showed a car with Arkansas plates for the year 1920 (not to assume that the baseball images date from the same year as the car image, or that one of the men in the attached photos necessarily owned the car). These two unlabeled photos were the only obviously baseball-related photos in the collection.”
There is a rich tradition of black baseball in Hot Springs, and in Arkansas in general, but not a lot of photographic evidence, so it’s not easy to identify the people in these photos, at least not right away. If you’ve got any ideas, information, or guesses, please comment or email me.
