Watkins did not play for the Brooklyn Royal Giants from 1907 to 1909. In 1907, he founded his own team which was sometimes called the Brooklyn X Giants or Brooklyn Colored Giants or Pop Watkins Colored Giants or Pop Watkins Colored Stars, etc. He seems to have changed the name a lot (one even advertising it as a team from Florida despite pretty much having the same players as always) until finally settling on the Havana Red Sox. Which was appropriate since he was following in the footsteps of the original Cuban Giants. But, basically, he had his own team from 1907 to 1923.
