I had thought that Jerry Kuntz, who has been studying the earliest Cuban professional teams to tour the United States, was perhaps the first researcher to uncover the 1899 tour by the All-Cubans; but Jerry wrote to say that Michael E. Lomax already discussed the 1899 All-Cubans tour in the final chapter of his fine history of 19th-century African-American baseball, Black Baseball Entrepreneurs, 1860-1901. Lomax’s book is highly recommended, as is Jerry Malloy’s edition of Sol White’s History of Colored Base Ball (which includes many supporting documents). Unless I’m mistaken, these are the only two books about 19th-century black baseball (and, of course, much of the Sol White book is about the earliest years of the 20th century).
