...who pitched for many eastern African-American teams in the 1910s and 20s, passed away recently at the age of 111 (or 109, according to some records), as you probably know. It’s stunning to realize that someone who played for the Homestead Grays before they made it big was still alive in the 21st century. By chance I found this the other day in the Chicago Whip (May 15, 1920):
The headline’s a bit confusing, as most of the article concerns a game the Pennsylvania Giants won, against the Chester Giants (another black team), with “Little Pop Simmons” striking out ten. Could “Little Pop” be Silas Simmons?
