Here’s a list of players in the 1906 Premio de Verano (a.k.a. the Cuban Summer League). This list supplies some first names for otherwise obscure players, several of which had played in the 1905 summer championship: Abelardo Santuce(s), Isidro Gallego, Manuel Valdés, Francisco Martínez.
The 1906 league played for less than a month. It didn’t get started until well into August, as an insurrection led by General Enrique Loynaz de Castillo (a veteran of the War of Independence) intensified. Baseball stopped by early September (the last game in the summer league being played on September 9), then the U.S. intervened and reoccupied the island. On top of all that, a devastating hurricane, said to be the worst in thirty years, struck Havana on October 17 and 18. Still, Havana’s baseball promoters were ready for the Cuban X-Giants in November, then the All-Americans, featuring “Mack” (a.k.a. George McQuillan) in December.
